3D reconstruction by drones of the MANASLU Base Camp during the #ManasluEKI expedition led by Alex Txikon

The photogrammetric restitution using drones allows the reconstruction of terrain in 3D for the analysis of the environment.

In the specific case of winter expeditions, Alex Txikon with the help of Drone by Drone, has been working on the use of this type of techniques through the use of UAS to monitor interesting situations for the safe and sustainable development of expeditions.

In addition to the visual animation that is made for visualization only for recreational purposes, the generated digital model allows the measurement of multiple parameters on it, being able to export the information in multiple formats for its exploitation and analysis to GIS or CAD type programs. The measurement of surfaces, volumes and slopes can be carried out with precision on the generated 3D digital model, if the appropriate tools are available.

The use of drones in the high mountains, not only provides spectacular images, but can provide us with data for subsequent analysis in aspects as important as safety, sustainability, the environment or local atmospheric phenomena.

The lines of work that are being worked on in this area in the high mountains together with Alex Txikon, suppose:
- Analysis of the erosion generated by human presence in the base camps.

- Presence of garbage and even the possibility of volumetric measurement of it to determine mitigation measures and its elimination.

- Observation and measurements of movements of Seracs dangerous for climbers.

- Observation and measurements of the Glaciers, for the evaluation of their retreat or loss of mass due to climate change and human impact on them.

- Realization of audiovisual content in 3D, for interaction and the possibility of drawing virtual tours of the base camp itself or interesting areas of the ascents. In this way, a more real immersion in the daily life of the climbers and of the expedition is achieved, and to get closer to the public in a more realistic way, without having to submit to the risks of expeditions to the Himalayas.
