During the snowfall of these past weeks, Drone by Drone has had the opportunity to test the DJI Avata drone, in an incomparable natural setting.
The DJI Avata is a compact and lightweight drone or UAS, designed to be piloted in FPV. Unlike the DJI FPV that the Chinese brand itself has in its catalogue, the Avata is more oriented to be used as a Cinewhoop-type drone, although in foreign flights it behaves perfectly, thanks to the support of its sensors and especially GPS positioning. The chassis of the DJI Avata makes it more resistant than the DJI PFV, and it is also possible to change parts of the fuselage that have been hit without the need for major repairs or large expenses. The flight speed in Sport mode is still a little short, but if you fly low and close to obstacles, the feeling for both the pilot and the spectator is satisfactory. In addition, the camera and stabilization have been significantly improved.
The unit that we have tested had the DJI Goggles 2 and the joystick type control (DJI Motion Controller).
Faced with a drone oriented towards the democratization of the world of FPV, without having to have too much idea of piloting this type of drone, we have verified that its handling through the Motion Controller is very intuitive and safe, although it falls short if we want to squeeze all the possibilities of the Avata outdoors compared to a pure FPV drone, like the ones we count on for other types of recordings.
Indoors it is also very stable, although there are times when the sensors lose the 'north' and you have to be careful when driving to regain control.
It can be said that it is a drone that allows you to enjoy piloting, and provide another point of view or recording different from traditional DJI drones, halfway between them and DJI FPV.
