The Technical Director of Drone by Drone has been interviewed by the EiTB news services on the arrival of the WP3 Orion hurricane-hunting aircraft at Loiu Airport, Bilbao.
In an interview broadcast on Gaur Egun on ETB1 and El Teleberri on ETB2, the main features of the spectacular NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) aircraft from the USA, named Kermit, has landed in Bilbao to be able to study in detail the train of Atlantic storms (Eowyn and Hermione) that are approaching Europe.
The WP-3D Orion is an aircraft based on the P3 maritime patrol aircraft developed by Lockheed in the 1950s. Specifically, the two WP-3D Orions (Miss Piggy and Kermit) operated by NOAA were produced in 1973 with special sensors and radars for atmospheric research, and are responsible for acquiring meteorological data inside hurricanes and severe storms. It is expected that by 2030 they can be replaced by the C-130J adapted for these tasks, which will be a new version of the also impressive Hercules aircraft.
We hope to see this type of aircraft again at Bilbao Airport, to the delight of aviation lovers.
